1998 Ford F-150 need help with engine noise

I recently noticed the engine running rough and initially knocking but only when it was cold or I turned on the heater.I went to start it after driving around for half the day and it wouyld not start it has a new battery and alternater no power drains when I try to start just a whine and then nothing plz help

Hi:
If all you hear is a whineing sound when you turn the key, it sounds like the solenoid is bad on the starter. Remove the starter and take it to a good parts store and have them bench test it.

Let me know what you find.
