After putting the truck in gear there is a burnt antifreeze smell. There is heat but not a lot. The coolant is circulating through the system. There are no apparent leaks and the reservoir is full. A day or so ago the heat was extremely warm and now there isnt much. It is very cold outside and the temp gauge seems to be working properly. What could be the causes to this problem? If it is an expensive problem is there a temporary cheap fix as we are in desperate financial distress?

Try first to back flush the heater core. At times they get clogged up and limit the anti freeze going through them causing little or sometimes no heat. Since you have some heat at times I doubt if it would be vapor locked.
