Hello,

An engine can shut down and lockup if there is a loss of oil pressure. If there is no oil flowing thru the engine it can lock up.
It can be triggered by a failed oil pump.
If the oil pump fails, oil will be unable to reach the engine components and those components will have excessive resistance and will lock up.

Also can happen is the engine is very low on oil. If the engine is very low on oil it will have a similar affect as a faulty oil pump, as oil will not circulate properly.
