1996 Ford F-150 thunk when shifting

I hear a loud "thunk" when I shift into reverse. Could this be a result of a clogged filter or something worse

The u-joints are located at both ends of the drive shaft. On a flat surface, place the parking brake on, place the vehicle in neutral, and check for excessive up and down play in the u-joint.
