Roaring Sound

I have 2002 Ford Explorer V6 with 88,000 miles that is making a roaring sound while driving. The sound appears to be coming from the rear. The sound stops when you lift off of the accelerator and when you make a left hand turn. I don't know if I should start at well bearings, universal joint or differential?

Have you looked underneath at the inside of the tires? Oil in there would indicate an axle bearing and seal, What happens if you drive till the sound appears, then you shift to neutral? If the sound goes away, check the carrier bearings.
