I have a 01 Ford Explorer Sport Trac it has 119000 miles and is a V6. I have a very loud clacking noise in the rear of my vehicle and was wondering what it is and what I can do about it?

I checked and nothing is broken. I think that it is the rear differential or brakes. I can shake the back tires and it has the clacking noise. What do you think it is and how can I fix it?

If you can hear it by shacking the tires, see if you can tell what area the noise is comming from, do one tire at a time, if it comes from the center then it would be the differental, if from one side it could be the bearing, or axle, or brakes

We were told that it was the differential. Could you tell me how to fix the differential myself and how much it might cost?
