Just recently my explorer started making a whining noise during acceleration. It is kind of a high pitch whine that increases while accelerating. It stops when you stop accelerating. Right now I am just looking for places to start. Possibly an alternater going out? Or a fuel pump? I don't think it is the transmission as there hasn't been any other signs. Hestitation, skipping, anything like that. One other note, I live in Minnesota and it has been very cold the last few days while this has been going on. Not sure if this could be related to the problem or not.
Thanks for your help.

Does it make the sound if you are in park or neutral and rev the engine? Also, I will say that cold weather can cause the alt to work harder and sometimes make a noise.

Let me know about the park / neutral sound.

Actually I had a mechanic look at it. Turned out the tensioner was going out so we put in a new one and a new serpentine belt and that took care of it.
Thanks for the help anyways!
