Engine Mechanical problem
2004 Ford Explorer 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 140 k miles

I have a 2004 Ford explorer with only 140,000k. One day it started to run poorly. I had a mechanic look at it and they told me the engine was done. No compression in # 4 cylinder. I started to take the engine apart. Once I got the valve cover off I noticed the intake valve spring was broken. I have 2 questions. It run poorly for about 1 day, could the valve have damaged the piston as it was floating in the spring. The other question is does the overhead camshaft have to be removed to replace the spring and is there any special tools that is needed to remove the spring

Hi there,

The cam will have to be removed and there is a special spring compressor that will allow you to fit a new spring in situ. You will also have to get an adapter to pump up the cyl with air to hold the valve up while you do the spring change, I would expect the valve to be OK, but if you compress the cyl and air escapes you will have a valve problem as well.
