I am experiencing a throbbing noise in the air intake of my 2003 Explorer. We have cleaned the throttle plate and today changed the mass air sensor and the noise is still there. It is intermittant and causes the engine to surge when it is throbbing. I can actually make it happen by tapping on the cover to the air fillter.
Any thoughts?

Tapping on the air intake causes the vehicle to start to surge? Disconnect knock sensor and do the same. Still the same problem? Is your iat sensor mounted in manifold or on the air cleaner box, check that also.

Check for cracks in the air intake also.
