2003 Ford Explorer Catalitic converter

I had my fuel pump replaced today, and on the same day they are telling me my catalytic converter went bad. It is rattling from pieces being in it. (Thats what they said). And you can hear it. Is it really 1400-2000 to replace it? At the parts store they have rear and front ones for 350. Why cant I just buys these and have them put in? What do I do? Push it off a cliff?

You can purchase an aftermarket converter such as a MagnaFlow from a local auto part store and have it installed. They are only around $200. The only way you CAN'T do this is if you live in California, because you have to purchase the special cat. Converter per CA emission rules so you would have to special order it from Ford which will indeed cost a hefty amount.
