my clutch is not fully engaging periodicly making it difficult to get in gear when the vehicle is not in motion. it seems the clutch preassure fades in and out randomly. would this be an indication of the slave cylinder going bad?

It could be the slave or a bad pressure plate. If it gets worse as the engine gets hot, I would go with the pressure plate. If temp doesn't matter, then the slave.
