2000 Ford Explorer what is a keyway n how does that fail?

I was drivin on hwy at 60 mph n engine just stopped.1st diagnosis was time chain broke, then a broken keyway in front gear.I understand most things abt mech but this is a new one how n why would that fail?

Bad parts. These things happen. Have seen the key way on a balancer get hogged out even though the balancer bolt was tight. One of lifes mysteries
