Recently cars temp gauge rose into hot zone; was able to bring in line by running heater; thinking it was the thermostat I had the thermostat replaced, started to drive home after and the temp shot up. Rose hotter than before- off the dial, turned heater on- nothing but cold air and would not bring the temp in line. Possible overlooked issues? Should the garage have noticed or test something else before going on my assumption?

If you stopped and told them to replace the t-stat, chances are that is all they would do. However, I have a few concerns. First, was the cooling system bled? If there is an air pocket, it will cause this to happen. Also, was the old coolant clean and did the radiator appear to be clear inside? Finally, and I know you don't want to hear this, but a bad head gasket can cause the same thing. Did you check for coolant mixing with the engine oil?
