The engine stalls at idle?

How low can you let the engine RPMs get? If you can get right down to where the engine should idle your idle control isn't funcioning properly. If you have to keep the RPMs higher than it should need to be then check the injectors and elecrical systems like the map or maf sensors.

1999 Ford Explorer automatic transmission with 60,000 miles. The car after 45 minutes of interstate driving stalled when stopped at exit. The stall felt like I had taken my foot off the clutch of a standard transmission. The engine started and ran well in park and neutral, but when put in gear, immediately stalled. The car would run in reverse, but not well. No previous problems.

Any thoughts?

For the past month or 2 whenever I start my car in the morning the car and engine starts shaking and the rpm starts jumping up and down then the car cuts off. After I start the car up a couple more times and it gets warm its fine. But as of 3 days ago, while I was driving the car started to rev but go no where, it wasnt changing gears properly. It feels as tho the tranny was slipping. Now its to the point where I cant drive the car. I was also told by previous mechanics that my transmission fluid was dirty or burnt. Is my tranny done and how much would it cost to fix or replace?

Based on your description, it sounds like the clutches are bad in the trans. At first, they can cause a chatter then begin to slip and eventually the car won't move. In gear it will feel like neutral.

Is that what is happening? If so, it will most likely need a general overhaul. Usually, the cost is around 2500.00 based on where you live.

Let me know if you have other questions.

My 99 ford explorer will start and have power but dies. It continues to have power if I give it gas and will drive if I am conitnously giving it gas but will die when I let off of it. Eventually it will kick in, usually after a few seconds of holding the gas in, but lately its been taking longer. The idle runs really low, does this have anything to do with it? And if it does how do I change fix?

First thing you need to do is have the codes read, Autozone does it free, Post the results with the code number(s). Even if the service engine light is not on, there should be freeze frame data stored.
If it won't make it to Autozone, buy a cheap scanner, they can be had for 30-40 dollars, a good investment, since they cover all cars sold in the USA from 96 on.
If the light is blinking, it means possible damage to the converter. Service it right away!

Couple thoughts.

First see if any codes are stored in the computer.

Check for vacuum leaks. The 4.0 had a problem with leaking intake gaskets.

IF no codes, I have come across problems with the Torque converter solenoid being broken out of it retaining bracket.

I have a 1999 V6 Ford Explorerer XLT with 143,000 miles. A little over a year ago, I started it up and it stalled out. The car continued to stall out unless I kept my foot on the accelorator (in other words it would not idle). I drove it to work which is about 7 miles away. I then returned home after work and I was going to bring it in the shop the next day. The next morning I went to start it up and it was fine. A couple of months later it happened again. It then stopped again, but I still brought it to a repair shop to see if they could diagnose the problem. They ran a full diagnostic test and everything came back fine. They didn't know what the problem was. This has now been happening every couple of months for over a year. The most recent time it happened it went on for over a week. I wouldn't mind but it is dangerous because you have to keep your foot on the accelorator and the break at the same time while driving. Do you have any ideas. Thank you in advance.

It seems as though the weather conditions have nothing to do with it at all. It has happened in the summer and winter. I usually don't drive my car for more than 30 minutes when this is going on and somtimes it goes away as I am driving and other times it seems to go away overnight. I replaced the fuel filter a couple of months ago but it has happened since then. I know this doesn't help much, but there really isn't much of a pattern when this happens. I appreciate any help.

First eliminate all vacuum or air leaks in the system. You may have a bad IAC ( idle air control) but try cleaning the throttle body first. Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle. If it still has a problem, replace the IAC.

The engine turns over, but as soon as you release the gas it stalls and the battery light comes on. The batter guage is at half and it doesn't seem to be draining, so I don't think it's the alternator.

We have had a previoius problem where it was a "hard" start and had to turn it over a couple of times before it would start and stay running.

Hi wldathrt31, Welcome to 2carpros and TY for the donation

Lets start by cleaning out the idle air control valve, PCV and EGR valves, also clean the MAF sensor with an electronic cleaner CRC and test the throttle position sensor-let me know

My 1999 Ford Explorer acts as if it is going to die while idling. If the headlights, the radio, heater, or air conditioner are on, I have to fight to keep it running. Is this an alternator problem?

Actually, the alt sounds fine. It is under more load with everything on; thus, it puts more strain on the engine.

As far as the engine, has the check engine light ever come on? Have you checked for vacuum leaks?

Let me know.
Joe
