1998 Ford Explorer smell of gas in the overflow

1998 Ford Explorer 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

i bought a used explorer. it keeps over heating an today i checked the over flow an smelt gas in it. i have to keep adding antifreeze, but theres no sign of water or antifreeze on the ground when i shut it off. sometimes there heat then theres non, what could be the cause of that?

Is the vehicle running good? The only thing I can think of is a bad head gasket or intake gasket allowing fuel to mix with the coolant, but this is really odd.
