Transmission problem
1997 Ford Explorer Four Wheel Drive Automatic 145000 miles

When I turned my switch from 4 wheel low back to auto, it wouldn’t disengage, and I lost a gear on the tranny. After a day, and a bump into a wall backing up, the 4 wheel low went off and the tranny was back to normal. Any idea's what might be wrong. I’ve never had any problems with the 4 wheel drive high, just low. This has happened once before but only for a few minutes.

Are you shifting to or from low range with the transmision in neutral or park? The transmission needs to be in neutral for the shift to take place without problems. Trying to shift it in park can cause the shift mechanism to bind.

I had a few instances where mny 97 explorer would 'act' like it was in four wheel drive after starting, like backing out of a parking space the tires would 'drag' while moving and turning. Diagnostic code reflected bad speed sensors. Switched them out and the problem is gone. Did it myself saved several hundred in labor.
