1996 Ford Explorer mech. Said "I need fuel pump ($585

I've priced fuel pumps, mid range is 150.00. Mech said 300.00 &change for fuel pump. MY question is how do I change it my self. I'm mechanicaly inclinde and I follow repair mannuals well.

Hello, this site here has access to mitchell1 subscription. I don't think there is better vehicle info anywhere.

You need to drain the tank. Wrestling the tank up and down can be time consuming, it is for me. I haven't dropped a tank on your year and model, I have others. The actual act of replacing the pump itself, is the easy part. Sometimes the fuel tube doesn't want to cooperate and I use a brass or copper drift on a metal locking ring. You can do it yourself, be safe.
