My ford Explorer 1995 wont shift out of park. Only way it does is if I put ignition in on position and put car in nutural and turn ignition on.

My 13 fuse pops thats the fuse for my breaks. Every time I change it and start the car and push the break it pops.

Any idea whats causing this?

I have tested the break switch thats fine.

Looked at the speed control that works fine.

You need to remove the rear light lenses and look for chafed wires. Also look under vehicle and see if it has a trailer hitch wire harness and make sure thats not melted.

So did you replace any light in the rear
do you have any out
if so check that
check the wiring for short to ground
check the brake light switch and wiring after it
good luck

Checked the Break Lights those seem fine, the break switch is fine the wiring to the switch seems fine.

Seeing that it bundled to 40 wires hard to figure out where it goes bad.

I feel your pain. Wiring is the hardest part of fixing cars. Slow and steady.

You need to trace the light green wire
it goes to multi-function switch
witch is very common to fail
then you have the high mount brake light
then lamp out module
then rear brake light
all the same color wire
light green you need to check it
good luck

Went through all the wires - All were clear - I am totally lost now.

Thought tihs information would help

Before this problem came about I was trying to get on the highway off the off ramp and my rpms went to 6-7000 it wasnt shifting gears. So I pulled over in the break down lane and stop the car put it in break put it back in drive and waited 5 minutes than I went back about my buisiness and car worked fine. Once I got to my gfs house, put it in park and went helped her came back to the car to go to walmart I stepped on the break and than I started the car and couldnt get it out of shift.

I am sure they work before I took apart the dash because the signals worked at the same rate and when I took off the rear lights it worked out of normal rate if you know what I mean.

Some models have on the floor between drivers and passengers side. There is a module that tells you if you have a light out. You might not have that option, I want to eliminate all possibilities.

Ok i just saw the shift interlock. its located on the steering column. it will have a light green wire a green and yellow wire and a black wire going to it. unplug that and see if the short goes away.
