1994 Ford Explorer overdrive not working

The overdrive on my ford explorer is not working properly all the other gears work perfectly except the overdrive, one day it will work and the next day it wont, when it doesnt work it acts like it was on neutral and im wondering what might caused the problem?

Has the check engine light ever come on? Is the ATF full?

It could be the locking converter going bad, but usually that will kick a check engine light to come on.

Hi joe thank you for answering my question but no the check engine light is not on and the transmission fluid is full, the fluid is old also what is a locking converter and is it important?
