I have a 94 explorer with an AL4D auto trans. I 1 weeks time the transmission has gone to leaking with out showing where. The vehicle already has an oil leak we knew about when we bought the truck. But this leak is not showing up. The bell housing is wet with oil (I tested it ) and a wire on the tail cone is wet with tranny fluid. However in a 13 mile drive home THIS MORNING I had to stop and put fluid in as I left work and this evening after resting allday and 1 6 mile round trip to store the stick was dry again with no marks on pavement. Please help.

Update: It was the vacume modual diaphram. The exhaust is on that side and it dried out the diaphram and sucked the fluid out of the trany and burned it like fuel mix. Tech said it was very common in that transmission and decline in '95.

Something you might want to check, the A4LD transmissions were known for several problems. Most of the time when they are put under a load they fail in your case they are also known for blowing fluid from the vent at the top of the transmission and most of the time you don't even see the transmission fluid. This is caused by over heating fluid, in most cases unless the vent is restricted, changing the fluid and filter will resolve your problem. Good Luck!
