Consider running an average of 3-4 fill ups and mileage driven before calculating MPG figures.
Purchase fuel from the same vendor, and purchase the same grade of fuel at each fill up. Make sure the vehicle is on level ground while at the pump. For example, if the vehicle is tilted towards the side of the filler neck, not as much fuel will be pumped into the tank, and you'll think you're getting great mileage all of a sudden.
Try to equalize as many variables as you can to get an accurate MPG figures.
