After my check engine light came on, I went to Autozone and they told me the code was PO171. After doing some research, I was led to believe it was the DPFE Sensor. I purchased one and put it on, but the engine light is still on.

Do I have to reset the codes before I can really see if I solved my issue - because the Check Engine Soon light is still on? Can I do this by disconnecting the positive battery cable for 15 minutes?

Did I replace something I shouldn't have?

P0171 is a lean code, probably a vacuum leak, Fords tend to leak at the PCV rubber elbow, check it with spray TBI cleaner, if the idle changes, you found a leak. Do not spray on exhaust manifolds! Ford sells the elbow.
