I would like to know if the timing has something to do with the exhaust turning red...

definitely a possibility. if the timing is too advanced it will cause red hot exhaust. could also be caused by a bad throttle position sensor (TPS).

a clogged cat is another possibility, however a cat doesnt go bad on its own... something has failed causing the porcelain in the cat to melt.... hope this helps with ideas.
