What would cause a Ford Escort to get locked in park?

My Ford Escort - way past its prime - occasionally will not release from park. Any suggestions on what to check?

Most automatic cars have a switch on the brake pedal so that the brake must be depressed in order for the shifter to be moved from the part position. That sensor can be either out of adjustment and loose on the brake pedal or the sensor or switch itself could be failing.
