Ford, escort, 1995, about 476,000 miles, 1.9L, auto transmission. I have a series of problems, but the car is running and goes well with good gas milage. TOday I had little to no brakes, I pressed all the way to the floor to get just a little break, used emergency break to stop at stop signs on hills. When the car is off, I have break pressure, when I put the key into the ignition a click is made at the shifter handle when I press the break. And there is break pressure untill the power car is started. Also, RPMs jump from 400-800, causeing the car to shutdown if RPM drop below 200? THere is fluid underneath the car next to the oil and transmission pan, I think it is coming out of the?Crank case? Or is it the transmission? The oil and transmission fluid look fine on the dip sticks? And the break fluid is an iota under max? But I had no break fluid to add? HElp Please need the car untill atleast march?

NO BRAKES

When stepping on the brake while at a stop is it gradually sinking in-if so the master cyllinder is defective-you can try a rebuild kit.

Rebuild master cylinder? NEgative friend. There is absolutly no pressure at all when I press down on the break untill it hits the floor. Even then I dont really stop I just slow down very very slowly. But when the car is off, the break pressure works like it did yesterday. Also it smells like break, like when your behind a big rig going down a long steep hill and he is riding his breaks, it stinks the inside of the car up. Ill Look in to a master cylinder rebuild? But I feel like it may be electrical? But all the fuses are good and this old beast does not have ANTI lock breaks?
