I have a 1997 ford escort lx wagon with a 2.0 liter engine and 170,000 miles, the car shakes when it idles and when stopped completely with the brake on, I was told the egr valve was bad when the service engine light came on, and was told that may be causing the shake, had the valve replaced and it still shook, when I asked the mechanic who did the work, he said it's normal for cars to shake, but this car feels like an earthquake id happening, I know thats not normal. Any ideas as to what could be wrong I would really appreciate

I would start by asking when was the last tune up. If its been awhile then maybe its time. As far as what could be wrong there could be a dozen different things wrong. For example: vacuum leak, incorrect timing, fautly distributor rotor or cap, bad valves, clogged air filter, faulty EGR valve among one of them and ETC ETC ETC ETC. If you have some knowledge and equipment you can run some test to eleminate possibly causes. If you need more help just ask. BYM

I have a similar problem. When I'm stopped at a light or stop sign, the idle is normal, but then it races. It does this intermittently, but only while I'm at a stop. My last tuneup was in July of this year. When I turn off the motor, a hissing noise emits from the engine. :

Check out all of my threads on the forum, im having a similar problem, ive replaced:

maf
o2 sensor
fulel pump
fuel filter
idle air control valve

and so many other little parts to each of those parts, likes gaskets, and today if I can get down there, im going to pick and pull and getting a ignition control module. Your shaking of the engine sounds like maybe a head gasket? I dunno viloent shaking, my suggestion is take it down to a mechaniic if your check engine light is on. I dont have that type of money to so so, but, good luck!
