I have a 1997 Ford Escort, 1.6 with 109,000 kilometers(I live in Portugal). It is an automatic. I have had a problem with the engine reving when I put the gear shift in Park and when I try to shift from drive to reverse. I have had the accelerator cable replaced and it worked better for a little while but alas, the problem returned. When the car is in "acceleration" mode I can turn the car off and then restart and the problem of accleration is resolved. I would appreciate any advise.

Have the TPS checked. Throttle position sensor.

Merlin is right. Check the TPS as well as the AIC (idle air control) valve. Good luck. Keep us posted.
