Central locking

Hi,
I have a ford escort 1997, 5 door hatchback, 1.6 16 valve car. The problem I am facing right now is that I can lock my car from the drivers side but cannot unlock from the drivers side ( central locking system in the car). I have to unlock it from passenger side.I understand that some electrical part may not be functioning properly, but dont know which one and what is it called and would it be easy for me to relpace it by myself if it needs replacing?

If your unlock knob is working on the passenger side, it just might be your driver side unlock/lock switch (under the knob). Driver and passenger side unlock/lock switch are connected together. If it is a power door lock relay, all sides (driver and passenger side) unlock switch will not work.
