Car smokes from engine

I have a 95 ford escort wagon, 1.9engine. When I turn the car on whit smoke comes out of the engine and exost. I was tiold I was burning oil and that I need valve seats. Could you elaberate this information please. And let me know the cost of the part.

You are burning something but, are you sure its oil? Are you adding oil on regular basis? Or, are you adding antifreeze on a regular basis? Replacing valve seats involves work on the head and replacing the head gasket. If its antifreeze you are burning you probably need only the head gasket replaced. Both will start you at about $500, depending on where you are located. But the valve seats typicaly require a maching shop which is more $$$. If it is oil have you tried oil additives for smoke? They SOMETIMES work.
