I have a 93 Ford Escort LX/Sport 2-door hatchback that currently has about 86,000 miles.

Just recently, it has started groaning when I turn the steering wheel past a certain point. It gets louder as I turn the wheel until it gets to one spot where it's very loud as long as I hold the wheel at the position. Then it gets softer again when I move the wheel back. At some points, the noise is gone completely.

It sounds to me like your power steering pump is either low on fluid or it's starting to fail. Power steering pumps start to make a groaning or whinning noise when they start to fail. They usually don't quit working all at once. So check your power steering fluid level to be sure you just don't need to add fluid before you think about replacing the pump.
