2005 Ford Escort check engine light came on

Yesterday I noticed that my check engine light is on. I dont know what could be causing it. I just put oil in it a few days ago so that should be fine Is there any minor things that could be causing this that I could check myself before taking it into a mechanic?

Need a OBDII reader to get the codes
check engine light come on when PCM detect a malfunction in the emission system and or that could effect it
codes will pin point the troubled area
check and make sure gas cap on and tight
