2001 Ford Escort Loud noise and smoke

While driving in the rain, I turn on the defogger and heat; then smoke started to come out from under the hood and also a loud noise started. The engine runs good but the noise still there evethough the heatter and defogger is off. Will appreciate some help.

Did it smell like melting plastic? Wires? Antifreeze?

Wehre was it comign from under the hood? Does it still do it?

Can you tell me where the sound is coming from, try to pinpoint it.
