2000 Ford Escort 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

i have a 2000 ford escort and the thermostat doesn't work it only moves in the summer time and now its winter it don't blow hot air like its suppose to could it be the heat coil

If you have checked the cars themostat and it does not work then you need to replace it. The vehicles interior heating will not work correctly if the thermostat is bad. You could also flush the cooling system and heater core(small rediator in heater unit)

A thermostat is supposed to open at a set temperature if yours does not open at that temperature then it's not working and needs replacing.

THERMOSTAT
Remove and inspect thermostat for corrosion and proper seating of valve. If okay, suspend thermostat and thermometer in a 50/50 mixture of coolant and water. DO NOT allow thermostat or thermometer to touch bottom or container. Heat water until thermostat begins to open.
Read temperature on thermometer. This is the initial opening temperature and should be within specification. Continue heating water until thermostat is fully open and note temperature. This is the fully open temperature. If either reading is not to specification, replace thermostat.

Thermostat
Removal (Escort)
Disconnect the battery ground cable.
Remove the air cleaner outlet tube (9B659)..
Drain the engine coolant to a point below the water thermostat (8575).
Disconnect the water temperature indicator sender unit and the engine coolant temperature sensor electrical connectors.
Disconnect the upper radiator hose (8260) and the heater coolant hose from the water thermostat housing.
Remove the water thermostat housing bolts, the water thermostat housing, and the water thermostat.

I have another question about the 2000 ford escort the service soon light is on and I took it to advance auto parts to run a check on it and it said that the air and fuel not mixing properly so I was wondering could carbon be around the o2 sensor

Yes there could be deposits on the sensor. Try removing and cleaning the MAF sensor to cure the fuel ratio fault !
