1999 Ford Escort 4 cyl Automatic

i had to change the battery on my moms car it was exploded with corrision and it was so bad the corrision got all over the cables.there is a wire plug that goes from the negitive cable to the fire wall it has four wires comeing out of it.what is this plug and its function>its very badly correted and causeing the car not to start.[img:80574fae1d]http://www.2carpros.com/forum/automotive_pictures/427220_moms_car_1.jpg[/img:80574fae1d]
