I have a 99 ford escort that apparently had bad grounding etc. Which caused the battery to charge at 17v and the battery was constantly dead. One night while driving the headlights blew out and the car was smoking at the battery. It still ran the next morning, started it up and it began to shake alot and died. It also smelt of burnt wires or something inside the car. It hasnt started since. It just turns over but will not fire. The fuel pump works when hooked up to an alternate power source but doesnt seem to while in the car. Why wont my car start?

If the alt was putting out 17 volts, you may have fried a few things. Infact, I'm surprised it didn't catch fire. You will need to have someone checkj the fuseable linkage, check if you are getting spark and fuel to the engine. Which ever one is missing, then you will have to start working backwards to find where the power is found to repar everything.

As far as the volts from the battery, it sounds like the alt has a bad eelectrical.
