1999 Escort SE Brake light indicator goes on and off

Just recently, in cold weather, my brake light indicator has been turning on and off sporatically. I haven't noticed any pattern. Only, once the car has been running for a while and is warmed up, it doesn't happen as much (but it still will appear and then disappear once and a while). Fiddling with the emergency brake handle doesn't do anything. Anyone have a similar problem or know why this light is coming on and off all the time?

Yup, topping up the fluid seems to be working. Although, it was only hafl way between MIN and MAX. Strange, but the light is gone!
