Electrical problem
1998 Ford Escort 75000 miles

My thermosat has been dodgy for a while. If turn the ignition key to power on the electrics but not the engine - the gauge rises to above the red. If I start the engine - it stops working completely.

I have had the temp sensor replaced - now my mechanic is suggesting a new dash. Any suggestions as I don't really want to fork out for a new dash

So, if you turn the key on then the gauge need on the coolant gauge goes up and stays up? Does it ever go back down with the key on? Do any of the other gauges move up or down when you turn the key to just on? After you start it and the gauge goes down, just it ever come back up while the car is running?

If I might add the sending sensor can be faulty and not the coolant sensor since ( I assume the engine is cold) and sending wrong info to the gauge.
