1998 Ford Escort powerless

I have replaced plugs wires and all vacuum hoses, it has a hard time starting and takes 10 minutes to get to 40 miles an hour. My father worked as an engineer for fords for 30 years.I am a woman and need some assistance now, lol I have had 3 different people say to replace the pump it is bad and the filter too at the same timebut don't want to replace them if they aren't bad.

HI: have you scanned engin codes?
Todays cars are complex, Without this info the most you could expect may be at best a valueless guess.
As you indicated throwing parts at this is a waste of dollars and time.? Scan info?

Better check your engine code. Or just call your father and have that look at. Don't replace anything first.
