A friend of ours has given us an Escort. It has a little bit of body damage due to an accident. It has been parked for about 2 years. When he parked it, it wouldn't start. My husband tried to start it. He said that it tries to start but doesn't completely turn over. Any idea of why? Also, he said that it won't come out of gear, he thinks because the linkage is stuck. He is very smart mechanically but he said he wanted to take it a mechanic. I would rather save the money and have him do it. How hard is it to fix the linkage in an Escort?

Your inertia switch most likely activated during the accident it was in. This cuts off fuel supply and will not allow vehicle to start. As for the gear being stuck, make sure the steering wheel is not seized up.
