1998 Ford Escort front brakes

I have been having trouble with my brakes the peddal is hard to push down then the brakes work but then feel very slow to release please help

That could be a couple things, Check the vacuum line going to the brake booster, On the calipers they have pins that it slides back and forth on, They have to move easily or they will cause problems. If thats all okay you might have to rebuild or replace your calipers or master cylinder. Good luck.
