About two weeks ago, my escort started this slight sputtering, after getting gas. Just a very slight sputter and hesitation that pretty much cleared itself up. A week later, it came back, very hard. The hesitation was terrible and the sputtering was very loud. Finally, a blinking SES light, which came out as a cylinder one misfire code. Ran Lucas injector cleaner through it along with some dry gas, then replaced the fuel filter, spark plugs and wires. Fixed the problem for about a day, then it returned. Worse this time. Misfire code still present, so I took it in for diagnostics, which found nothing to be wrong with the electrical system. Fuel pump was checked out as well. So far, nothing. The fuel injector on cylinder one began to tick. Mechanic suggested that it may need cleaned out, that I may have build up. Went for full fuel injector service, complete cleaning out. It corrected the problem for two days. The problem came back today, along with the same misfire code. The sputter and hesitation is slightly less than it was before, but seems to be getting more frequent. The tick comes and goes, sometimes louder than other times. The louder the tick becomes, the harder the vehicle sputters and jumps. Flashing SES light again. Are these symptoms of a bad fuel injector and is there a way to test the injector? Any idea how expensive this test may be, or would it be more affordable to simply replace the injector and hope that it was the problem? Any ideas? Thanks a million.

You hvae described a fuel injector problem beautifully, to check the injector change its place with another one, and if the code goes with it its a bad fuel injector, if it stays at one then its not the injector. Should buzzing not ticking, post backthe results.

Well believe it or not, the shop quoted me an estimate for replacement that was about the same price as just testing it out, so I'll go ahead and replace it. And surprise, it started buzzing today. I'm convinced myself that it is a fuel injector problem so if nothing else, I will rule out a bad injector by having it replaced. Have the appointment tuesday to have it done. Normally I would have at least tried to replace it myself but no garage, and living in NY, I'll gladly pay someone else rather than freeze haha.
