1998 Ford Escort 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

I have a 1998 ford escort that has 136,000 on it. When you give it gas the rpm goes to 5 and stays stuck. It idles high at stop signs and it wont kick down until we hit the gas pedal fast. What can this be.

Well it could be several things, firstly I would clean all the parts including linkage with carb cleaner.(Throttle plate). And then check the throttle position sensor(tps). Then Your idle air control valve probably has lots of carbon on it causing it to stick out or simply needs to be replaced. The tps is more than likely the culprit. And your cleaning is definately a good thing to do also. Do you have a check engine light on?
