I have a 1997 Ford escort. About a year ago I had the transmission go out on me. So I had it repaired.
But since then the service engine soon light comes on every great once in a while. Haven't driven it much since then but have been driving it more frequently now, since the A/C went out in my other car. The light didn't come on for a long time. But now it is back on and I think for good. I got a OBD II scanner and got the code P1744- found out that it means the torque converter clutch system is stuck in the off position. Can you give me any suggestions on this subject? I would appreciate any enlightenment on it.

The torque convertor clutch solenoid has failed or the PCM is not commanding it to engage. Its purpose is to lock up the torque convertor under certain conditions to reduce engine RPM and save gas.

A scan tool could tell you if the PCM is commanding lockup, if so, the solenoid would have to be changed.

Another possibility would be the brake switch, if the brake switch is not working the PCM will not command lockup.

You would have to take it to a trans. Shop and get a diagnosis.

I know this post is old. However, for other people with the same problem I made a video on how to diagnose transmission codes P1744 P0749 P1740 P1742 on 1997 Ford Escort. I hope this helps someone solve their problem with low cost tools. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-2T4qyL7JU
