1997 Ford Escort Gears won't engage

The engine starts and runs fine, but when I move the gear shift to R, D, L nothing happens. Should I try to change out the fluid or just tow it to a transmission shop?

First check to see if there is oil by checking the t/m dipstick while the engine is running in park. If there is oil to the full mark then the tranny is needing professional attention. If there is little or no oil add and see what happens which by now the clutches are probably burnt due to lack of oil. If nothing happens see a professional t/m repair shop.
