1997 Ford Escort Escort only starts sometimes

I have a 1997 ford escort 1.4l, the problem started with the car stuggling to start now an agin then I got worse and worse an there didnt seem to be much power to the car. Then a few weeks ago the car wouldnt start at all but it was turning over. Sometime the car will start an when it does the isnt much power. Not sure why this is any ideas thanks sam

First I would say check/change airfilter, and look inside the box that houses the airfilter, and see if there is a dirty little breather sponge/filter, that will need changing, also you may want to change the gas filter. If this doesnt prove any good, then you will need to verify which component, fuel or spark is missing when the vehicle doesnt want to start.
