1997 Ford Escort coolant leak

I have a 1997 ford escort lx and lossing coolant but can't find where the leak is coming from but when I start the car yoou can smell it from the exhust pipe

You either have a bad head gasket or a bad intake manifold gasket.

You should do a cylinder compression test to verify if it is a bad head gasket. Lowest should be no more then 25% less then the highest.
