hi there I have a 1997 ford escort 1.8 si, when driving the vehicle it cuts out in low gear such as coming to a junction but drives fine in higher gears also what is the best way to get to the oil filter so I can change the oil, and how do you set the tick over? Hope you can help, many thanks

I am only addressing your car shutting off - it could be a PCV valve, and I think your's is in the valve cover. I'm not a mechanic, but my car is doing the same thing. There is a label (sticker) under the hood that diagrams where the vacuum hoses are located, and that's how I found mine. I have a 1.9 L engine and mine is easily accessable, but yours is in a different place. Do an internet search on "checking escort pcv valve". That helped me tremendously.

Ours would sometimes shutter, kinda felt like the tranny was slipping or like the car was sputtering, we fixed ours by changing the plug and wires
