Engine Mechanical problem
1997 Ford Escort 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

I'm trying to get my 97 escort to start. How can I check the timing with out removing the crankshaft pulley? There is a spark and I smell fuel when turning the engine. I'm thinking that the timing is out. Also what purpose does the crankshaft sensor serve?
