1996 Ford Escort idle problem

Plain jane ford escort starts ok, but idles down to rough / stumble idle. Compression check ok, no bad valves per vacuum guage. Replaced idle air control valve, no help. Vacuum guage swings wide when idling - looking at timing problem? If so-why and what part?

Check the PCV/EGR valves and throttle position/MAF sensors
