I have a 1993 Escort that is doing a couple of weird things. On long trips on the freeway the car is running very cold and then the idle is kicking itself way high as if to compensate. If you turn the car off and restart it is fine. And then today it started not wanting to idle at stops. It died once and then had a very rough idle as if it wanted to die. Is this a sensor of some kind that needs replaced?

Try installing a new thermostat to make it run at the right temp. The idle problem sounds like the Idle Speed Control Motor may be going out or sticking. They dont always set a code, but will do what you describe
